Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organisation made up of survivors of the atomic bombs of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was given the Nobel Peace Prize in 2024. Members of this group, known as the “Hibakusha,” have devoted their lives to promoting a nuclear-weapons-free world. Their firsthand accounts of the atrocities of nuclear war have been essential in increasing international awareness and solidifying the prohibition against the use of such weapons.
Nihon Hidankyo was honoured by the Norwegian Nobel Committee for his unwavering efforts to stop nuclear weapons from being used in the future and for his efforts to raise awareness of the devastating effects of such weapons. The committee stressed that this prize comes at a time when nuclear dangers are once again looming in world affairs.
