Rapidus is a Japanese semiconductor enterprise that emerged in 2022, aiming to restore the country’s semiconductor industry. They want to design and mass-produce top of the line semiconductors, particularly in the field of advanced chips of 2-nanometers technology.
The Japanese government and homegrown giants such as Toyota, Sony, and NTT were greatly involved in this drive, which is part of the national strategy to regain semiconductor sector global competitiveness.
Rapidus is dedicated to the development of next-generation semiconductors that will play a vital role in technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, 5G, and autonomous driving.
In addition to this, Rapidus has formed partnerships with foreign organizations and research institutions, particularly with IMEC located in Belgium and IBM in the U.S. In this way, technologies, expertise in the semiconductor production will be at their disposal.
The company is looking at setting up a cutting-edge manufacturing factory in Japan, which can be instrumental in the global semiconductor supply chain and disrupt the existing duopoly worked by TSMC and Samsung of Taiwan and South Korea respectively by the late 2020s.
